Red River Parish Schools Proud of Local Student That Gets Presidential Shout Out

A northwest Louisiana third grader is getting some presidential attention.  During the State of the Union address, President Obama mentioned Red River Elementary third grader Amirikis Louis Smith.  Smith gave Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover $50.00 from his savings to give to the president to help the people of Haiti. The president mentioned Smith's donation at the end of the State of the Union address, saying that the student epitomized the decency found in American people.  The money will go to the Clinton-Bush Haiti fund.

H1N1 (swine Flu)
As you may know, the H1N1 (Swine Flu) is a contagious disease. It is caused by the influenza virus, which can be spread by coughing, sneezing, or runny noses. It can cause: Fever, chills, sore throat, coughs, runny or stuffy noses, headache, diarrhea, muscle aches and fatigue. Influenza can lead to pneumonia and seizures. The Flu is easily spread from person to person. Therefore, we are taking steps to reduce the spread of flu in the Red River Parish schools. The following steps are recommended from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to prevent the spread of the Influenza virus:
• Frequent hand washing with soap and water or the use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Covering coughs and sneezes with tissues or coughing or sneezing into elbows, arms or sleeves instead of hand when tissues are not available.
• It is very important to keep sick children home for at least 24 hours after there is no sign of fever without fever-reducing medications. Do not send children to school sick.
• Classroom surfaces and school facilities are wiped down with appropriate cleaning agents.
• Influenza vaccine is also recommended for anyone who wants to reduce the likely-hood of becoming ill with the influenza virus.
